UnderFloor™ Heat for Existing Floors

Warm existing floors without replacing the floor coverings!

SunTouch 120v Mats

SunTouch® UnderFloor™ radiant heating mats are the perfect solution to provide retro fit heat for most floors.

These specially designed radiant heating panels are easy to install and warm existing floors from underneath the existing sub floor and flooring material.

UnderFloor mats are Safe and UL Listed to provide 10 Watts per Sq Ft (34 BTUs/SF). How much heat reaches your floor surface depends on the flooring and R-Value of the sub floor and flooring.

A typical 3/4 inch thick wood subfloor has an R-Value of only 0.9, so UnderFloor is very effective for most floors:

  • Expect up to 15º F more warmth on most floors of Tile, Wood, Stone or Laminate;
  • For Carpet, expect 6-10º F more warmth. The thickest carpet and pad allows less heat.

Easy Installation

Our Under Floor Heating mats are “do-it-yourself” friendly or can be installed by a handyman or contractor. If you have access under a floor simply staple UnderFloor heating mats to the floor joists and connect the factory installed 10 ft power leads directly to the thermostat or junction boxes. Don’t forget to insulate under the mats as it is essential to performance.

Each UnderFloor heating mat is designed to be installed in only one joist bay. The heating mats cannot be cut shorter to fit a shorter joist bay or modified in any way to cross into another area. More than one mat may be installed in a joist bay where there are barriers just don’t let the mats touch or overlap.

Premium UnderFloor Radiant Heat

SunTouch UnderFloor is true radiant heating and has 2 layers of Radiant Foil (that’s the blue you see in the above image). These 2 layers of Radiant Foil greatly improve performance and spread the heat safely and evenly from the SunTouch heating wire inside.

Available in 2 widths to fit 12 or 16 inch joist spacing (center to center, not between edges) to fit nearly all North American Homes.

UnderFloor comes out of the box ready to install. Our power leads are assembled, connected and installed at our Factory for your safety and Long Life. Inferior products require connection of the power lead by hand at the job site. SunTouch insists on a UL Factory connection by trained technicians to ensure safety and performance.

Installation Steps

SunTouch Underfloor Installation Step 1

Step 1

Unroll mat and staple 1 side to side of first joist so foil will be 2” from Sub floor above and hangs down like a curtain.

SunTouch Underfloor Installation Step 2

Step 2

Staple other side to opposite joist. Each mat must fit within a single joist bay.

SunTouch Underfloor Installation Step 3

Step 3

Mount Electrical boxes and connect mats in parallel to power in junction boxes. Follow applicable building and electrical codes, using conduit to electrical boxes as required. 15 amps maximum per thermostat. If you have only a few mats, the power leads may reach the thermostat without a Junction Box.

Step 4

Connect the SunStat thermostat and test the system. Then install fiberglass insulation batts (R-11 to R-19) up to the mats. Insulation must be installed at the ends of the joist bays vertically or 6 inches after the mat ends.

Kitchen Layout Example Using UnderFloor Mats

Each electric UnderFloor heating mat is designed to be installed in a single joist bay. The heating mats cannot be cut shorter to fit a shorter joist bay or altered in any way.

Do not try to fill multiple joist bays with 1 mat. However, multiple mats may be installed in a joist bay where there are obstructions (such as cross bracing) as long as they do not overlap or touch.

In this layout, four 9.5'x16" and eight 4'x16" mats are required to warm the floor area.

Kitchen Layout Example Using UnderFloor Mats

The heat mats are wired together in parallel (not in series) in junction boxes below the floor, then an electric wire is fed over to the SunStat control.

Mat lengths should be selected so they fit completely within each bay and allow for the easiest wiring. When all the power leads start on one side, it will be easy to wire them together in the junction boxes. Code requires junction boxes to remain accessible at conclusion of the job.
